Sharing Talk on "Service-Learning Experience in HKBU" and "Assessing Student's Learning Outcomes in Service-Learning"
On 1st Nov 2019, a sharing talk was held by the Service-Learning Section featuring speakers from local Universities with successful experience in implementing Service-Learning projects.
The talk started out having Ms. Cindy Chan’s sharing of innovative projects in the CISL (Centre for Innovative Service-Learning) in Hong Kong Baptist University. Their service-learning projects are vibrantly flourishing at a powerful magnitude reaching up to 40 projects within two years; ranging from culture, science, medics, sociology to business ventures and others. Ms. Chan is the Director of the Centre since its early establishment. She shared with us much inspiring experience and recommendations on setting up, maintaining and advancement of service-learning projects, including efforts to communicate with academics on their aspirations and preferences, giving flexible support to staff as well as enforcing elements of excitement, innovation and impact in the projects.
The second speaker is Mr. Calvin Lau, who is the Senior Project Officer at the Office of Service-Learning at Lingnan University. He introduced the background and relevant research processes of designing and testing out the questionnaire. In much detail, he had also explained the structure and functional sections to evaluate different areas of student’s learning progress. This new questionnaire set will be adopted across all major universities in Hong Kong which practices the service-learning pedagogy. Our University would also be using this set of questionnaire from 2019/20 onwards.
The talk attracted both academic and administrative staff who came to know more about service-learning. We also are honored to have in the audience Dr. Maureen Chan from Lingnan University to come participate in the event. The participants of the talk showed much interest in the topics and some raised questions and interacted with speakers during Q&A. Dr. Felix Tang, Associate Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (Service-Learning) and Dr. Ben Cheng, Director of the Centre of Teaching and Learning, expressed appreciation towards the speakers.
The Service-Learning Section would be organizing more sharing and workshops in the future, and continue to coordinate more meaningful projects for HSUHK students and teachers.
