Service-Learning in Action: Sports Event Management at the Triathlon Test Event

“Connected classroom learning to real-world experience in sports event management…”

In a remarkable demonstration of service-learning, over 30 students from the Service-Learning module and PE module (“PE1001 Event Management in Sports” and “PE1007 Science and Technology in Sports and Physical Activities”) participated in a service-learning project during the 15th National Games Triathlon test event, held 1 and 2 March 2025 at Central Harbourfront and Victoria Harbour.

In-class and On-site Briefing

This initiative allowed students to translate classroom theory into practice. They engaged in class discussions with Ms Chow Chiu Nam, President of the Triathlon Association of Hong Kong China, which enriched their understanding of large-scale event management. Additionally, an on-site briefing further enhanced their readiness for the event.

Test Event

The triathlon featured around 110 athletes from Hong Kong, Macau, and the Mainland, showcasing individual races and introducing a mixed relay format for the first time. The student team supported the Energy Stations along the race route, while also assisting with crowd control and emergency response coordination. They collaborated with the organiser and various government departments to provide a safe and efficient experience for spectators.

Their professionalism and teamwork not only contributed to the event’s success but also equipped students for future careers in event management.

Highlighting the Service-Learning programme’s success, a former student from last year’s service-learning project at the Triathlon World Cup has now joined the sports sector. As a staff member for the recent test event, he showcased the impact of experiential learning on career development in the sports industry.
