Students Showcase Innovative Event Management through Service-Learning

“Showcasing Sustainability and Diversity Initiatives in Collaboration with Industry Partners”

The BUS3009 Service-Learning Project, jointly organised by the Service-Learning Section of the Centre for Teaching and Learning and the Department of Marketing, successfully connected HSUHK students with Baobab Tree Event (BTE), known for events like the HK Wine & Dine Festival and Vegetarian Food Asia. Under the guidance of module instructor Mr Roy Ying from the Department of Marketing, the students explored practical strategies to reduce waste and carbon footprints, gaining hands-on experience in the dynamic world of event planning.

Engaging Learning Experience

144 students were encouraged to integrate concepts of Diversity & Inclusion and Sustainability and create a marketing proposal. Two seminars were organised, featuring industry experts like Ms Angela Lee, General Manager of BTE, and Ms Vivien Cheng from Green Earth.

Students served as patrollers at major events, gaining invaluable insights into event operations.

Pitch Day

Top 4 finalists were selected to present their proposals to Ms Samantha Chan, Senior Director, and Ms Jess Ho, Manager of BTE on 6 Feb 2025. Judges provided unreserved feedback to the finalists.

Dorothy Choy, HSUHK student from the School of Business, stood out with her innovative idea centered on establishing a unique halal food festival that celebrates cultural diversity while specifically addressing the dietary needs of the Muslim community. She has been nominated for the Service-Learning Excellence Award, which includes a cash prize of HK$1,000. Good job and congratulations!

Student Sharing

“Participating in the Service-Learning project in BUS3009 sparked my interest in the growing niche market for halal food and its importance to the Muslim community. This experience inspired me to research how businesses target this market while addressing the needs of diverse communities and minorities. ”
