Celebration Gathering of Service-Learning 2018/19 “Convergence of Hearts and Minds”
The first Service-Learning Celebration Gathering was successfully held on 27th June 2019, celebrating the fruits and memories of pilot credit-bearing service-learning (S-L) projects completed in Semester 2, 2018-19. The theme of this gathering is “Convergence of Hearts and Minds”, expressing the dynamic collaboration where students, teachers and community partners merge their caring hearts for social service with their clever minds to design and implement useful and meaningful projects.
Prof. Hui, our Vice President (Academic and Research), who has been showing great support to our service-learning projects all along, attended our gathering and was impressed by the success of the pilot projects; he also encouraged future development of S-L projects. Dr. Felix Tang, responsible for the Service-Learning Section in the Centre for Teaching and Learning, showed great appreciation of the S-L teachers and students who had put in immense effort in the hard work, and vouched to continue to provide more support and S-L opportunities in coming semesters. He also introduced Queenie and Iris, staff of the Service-Learning Section, who would help teachers in arranging the projects.
The three teachers who led the S-L modules were Dr. Karen Yeung, Dr. Kevin Zeng from the Department of Marketing and Ms. Maggie Wong from the Department of Social Science. They all had put in a great effort throughout the semester in preparing the logistics, materials, giving guidance and extra coaching to the students, and using extra time to organize and hold S-L services and activities.
Student representatives from all the three S-L modules also attended the gathering, in which Emmy Yip (student of ASI1002 Individual and Society) shared her interesting and rewarding experience from her S-L project. Isabel and Tracy, both social workers from our community partner (Caritas Lai Kok Elderly Center) also visited us in this gathering. They both gave very positive feedback about the projects at their Elderly Center. Other participants included some teachers who are interested in doing future S-L projects.
The Service-Learning Section is looking forward to helping more staff and students enjoy the fruitful S-L experience in the coming year!

Isabel, social worker from Caritas Lai Kok Elderly Center, visited us in this gathering. She expressed that service-learning had provided a practical and good opportunity for students to get to interact with the elderly and also to use their academic skills to help the elderly center to evaluate and improve the center’s services.
