“The students’ game booths were very meaningful and helpful”
On 13 and 15 April, 2026, students from FIN1001 Personal Finance and the Society brought energy and learning to a local elderly centre through a unique service-learning activity. Using interactive game booths, the students fostered intergenerational connections while helping seniors better manage their finances in retirement and raising their awareness of common scams.
By engaging directly with the elderly community, students translated classroom knowledge into practical support, empowering seniors to navigate financial challenges and protect themselves from fraud.
One student said, “Using games to teach financial literacy and scam awareness made the learning experience engaging for the seniors. It was rewarding to see them actively participate and gain useful skills.”
An elder participant expressed her gratitude, saying, “The students’ game booths were very meaningful and helpful. They made complicated topics easy to understand, and I feel more confident managing my money and avoiding scams. I really appreciate their kindness and effort.”
Beyond financial education, the activity fostered meaningful intergenerational dialogue, breaking down social barriers and reducing feelings of isolation among the elderly. The students’ presence and genuine interest helped create a warm, supportive environment.
As Hong Kong’s population ages and scams targeting seniors rise, such initiatives are crucial. The service-learning programme not only enhances student learning but also contributes to building a safer, more inclusive community.
